Do any of these phrases sound familiar? • “That’s not my job.” • “Our department has always done it this way.” • "What are they talking about? If they do, you've likely encountered the Silo Effect. The Silo Effect is a mindset where some departments or business units don’t share information or collaborate toward a common goal for the good of the organization. Silos can cause project delays, mistrust, and toxic work environments. For example, it's confusing when departments don’t align goals, language, and messaging. People aren’t sure what to do, who’s strategy to follow, who’s responsible, and what specific outcomes management wants to achieve. When different departments use insider language, summarizing the wealth of concrete data in their heads, those not privy to the underlying meaning, hear only vague phrases. So much so, that to anyone outside the industry (or department), insider jargon can stall projects, be intimidating to a novice, or simply confusing. Confusion leads to inaction. We are NOT powerless against silos! By understanding the causes of silos, you can start smashing them and build bridges that foster belonging, trust, and collaboration throughout the organization.
